Tangerine Dream

January 12th, 2012

With spring on its way & the weather looking set to be a good one we think it’s time to start looking into our favourite colour trend of this coming season. Make way for Pantone‘s colour of the year — Tangerine Tango! Mostly orange (with a dash of coral), this shade is supposed to emante heat and energy & will look amazing with the cinnamon tans!

Dress – Oasis

The shade is not for the faint of heart (or color palette), as it’s one that’ll get you and your outfit noticed — big time. We like pairing it with neutral basics or with another bright piece for a color-blocked effect, or trying it in small doses, in the form of standout accessories.

Pantone is considered the world’s authority on color. Its recommendations and guides for selecting and matching colors influence designers of interiors, clothes and home furnishings. It may be a little too much to handle if your bedroom is like a neon circus but we reckon this colour is a great addition to the wardrobes!

Reiss Roll Sleeve Top

This vibrant shade is not only reserved for clothing, we have already seen it leaking into make-up trends over the past year with bright coral & orange colours appearing on lips, cheeks, nails & even eyes.

We cannot wait to start brightening up our wardrobe! My dream buy from this trend would have to be this amazing Blumarine bag!

Have you seen any good bargains in this hot new shade?

Twist & Shout

January 11th, 2012

Here at LA Academy we like to keep you all up to date with the latest trends, here is our first new hair trend of 2012 to report. Move over braids, there’s a new hot hairstyle in town: The twist! Celebrities and models alike are forgoing plaits in a mass movement towards twists . Unlike a braid, which requires some serious finger dexterity, twists benefit from being easier for the average, non-stylist to create on her own. But don’t mistake their simplicity for dullness — we’ve seen so many interesting and funky iterations of this hairstyle, from retro rolls to romantic updo’s, we’re swimming in possibilities!

Here are a few of our favourite ways to work this new trend.

Hang loose! Side-swept styles are a classic go-to for big nights out. Use a teeny twist to neatly gather your hair to one side. Or for more texture, divide the section you want to roll into two pieces and wind them together in a spiral.

The vintage rolled effect first made major waves at the Preen Spring Collection show during New York Fashion Week. The look was neatly structured, sweet, and inspired by ’40s hairstyles. Then, earlier this month, Scarlett Johansson mimicked the ‘do with a slightly more teased version.

Add pizazz to your ponytail by twisting the hair on each side of your part until you reach the nape of your neck. Secure with a clear elastic and backcomb the loose strands for sleek yet wild combo. For a more polished finish, wrap the hair ends into a low bun.

This season we were obsessed with Rachel McAdams’ cluster of curled, mini buns. The teeny wraps were an elegant and whimsical way to glam up her look. To keep the style low-key, create messy knots so strands stick out.

There are so many ways to make this your own.

Fashions newest Muse

January 10th, 2012

2012 is set to be the year of the Muse, Arizona Muse that is. The Santa Fe native began her modelling career back in 2008 after signing with Next Models (who by the way have just signed Solange Knowles) & her career really started taking off after landing contracts with Prada & Yves Saint Laurent in 2011 not to mention gracing the pages of Itlaian, French, German, Korean, Australian, British AND American Vogue.

As if 2011 wasn’t successful enough for this rising star she also opened the spring Victoria Beckham, Preen, Fendi & Isabel Marant shows in New York, Milan & Paris & closed for Vera Wang and Versus.

Arizona is tipped to be the face of 2012 maybe even taking over some of the fairy dust left behind by supermodel veterans Kate Moss & Gisele Bundchen. She has already signed with Louis Vuitton for the Spring cruisewear line.

Starting her year with a bang she is appearing on the first 2012 cover of British Vogue in the February edition. The retro-style pose and catalogue styling seems to make her appear like a 1950s housewife sporting an 1990s short hairdo. There could also be a touch of 1980s thrown in thanks to that blue eyeshadow and cherry drop earrings. Then there is the dress from Prada’s Spring/Summer 2012 collection which is already getting a lot of coverage in magazines around the world.

What do you think of the latest cover girl?

Another Icon joins MAC

January 9th, 2012

Iris Apfel is an octogenarian fashion maven. Her flair with colour and accessories and her remarkable wardrobe was the subject of an exhibition, Rara Avis: Selections from the Iris Barrel Apfel Collection (Rara Avis = Rare Bird), at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in 2005. The show featured 82 ensembles and more than 300 accessories, chosen from a wardrobe amassed over the last 50 years

Her style has inspired books, jewellery ranges, museum exhibitions and many a student’s embarkation on a career in fashion.

At the tender age of 90, Iris Apfel is now taking on the world of make-up, delivering her inimitable eccentricity to the fashion-driven – and far younger – crowd who usually shop at MAC.

The self-described “geriatric starlet” has seen a recent resurgence in the public eye thanks to her fashion line on HSN & in keeping with this line, the MAC collection is full of bombastically bright lipsticks, attention-grabbing nail lacquers and unambiguous hues of eye-shadow.

Perhaps at odds with many of her peers’ tastes, the palette she has chosen for the line is as contemporary as ever, with a hot pink lipstick that would not look out of place on another of the make-up company’s fans, Nicki Minaj.

Gemstone-like green, shocking pink and scarlet sit alongside no holes-barred dark grey, blue and orange.

On aging:

Getting older ain’t for sissies, I’ll tell you…You have to push yourself when you’re older, because it’s very easy to fall into the trap. You start to fall apart—you just have to do your best to paste yourself together. I think doing things and being active is very important. When your mind is busy, you don’t hurt so much.

The Rare Bird collection is available at MAC stores now, the LA team have already picked our favourite lipstick but we hear they’re selling out fast so we’re keeping this one to ourselves until it’s safely stowed away in our make-up bags!

Get Glowing

January 6th, 2012

During the winter months our skin gets hidden under all the winter woolies & layers. We tend to forget that even though we are not showing much skin we still need to take care of it. They say that a baby renews their skin every 2 weeks, as we get older & our cells slow down this process takes much longer which is why exfoliation is key!

The easiest way to keep your skin glowing is to use exfoliating gloves or a body brush in the shower. These can be used with any shower gel or soap & will help buff off those dead skin cells. The gloves are by far the lazy girls way to exfoliating & they are available in Boots stores.

If you have been neglecting your skin all winter & feel that you need a little extra push to brighten it up then use an exfoliating wash as well. Many brands offer high-priced body scrubs but there is no need to break the bank to get glowing skin. Here’s a few of our favourites:

Soap & Glory The Scrub of Your Life Body Buffer €10

The Body Shop Cocoa Cream Textured Body Scrub €15

Organic Surge Tropical Bergamot Body Scrub €6

Don’t forget to moisturise after your shower, if you moisturise while your skin is still damp it will lock in more of the moisture & keep your skin supple & smooth.

Do you have any secret tips of your own for smoother skin?
