Signature Look – Lana Del Rey Hair

Wednesday, February 1st, 2012

She is one of the newest big things to catch our attention & with her sultry voice & looks it is no wonder Lana Del Rey is quickly making a name for herself as a new-age icon. Her style is a mixture of old Hollywood meets new Brooklyn & she describes herself as a ‘Gangsta Marilyn Monroe’.

What is the first thing that us girls think when we start obsessing over a new star style? How do we copy this ourselves!? Lana’s hair is one of her most notorious fashion statements more often than not rocking the Old Hollywood curls & the LA team are loving this revamped style! To create this look yourself part your hair quite far to one side & when it is still slightly damp run some mousse through it to make sure your style will last you all day!

Next, you need to get yourself some large bendy rollers available at Boots, if you want tighter curls you can opt for a smaller roller. Section off the fringe section of your hair & roll it backwards away from your face, twist the rollers around one another to secure them. You might want to add a bulldog clip to keep the hair from unwinding. Continue this around your head with about 5 rollers using large sections of hair.

Wrap a scarf around your head & go get your beauty sleep! When you wake up the next morning simply unwind the hair from the rollers & use your fingers or a wide tooth comb to relax the curls a little. Spritz a little hairspray & you are ready to go!

It’s all in the eyes

Tuesday, December 13th, 2011

Everyone wants to make their eyes pop at the Christmas party this season. The questioin is how to really make your eyes stand out & what colours will compliment you!

The first thing that will really make your look sparkle is flawless skin. Mix your foundation with a tiny drop of The Body Shop Tinted Glow Enhancer. Mixing this with your foundation will give you that coverage that you want while also giving your skin a healthy glow.

Using a primer like Urban Decay primer potion on your lids will make the colour of your eyeshadow more pigmented & will also keep your look intact for much longer. A necessity for those wild nights out!

Use a colour similar to your skin tone to create a base on your eyes & even out your skintone before coming in with the colour that will make your eyes shine bright!

Green Eyes Use a warm pink or rose tone on the crease

Brown Eyes If you have brown eyes, you are one of the lucky ones. Brown eyed girls can use any warm tone to enhance their eyes. Create a dramatic contrast between the dark shades & the whites of the eyes line the waterline with eyeliner.

Blue Eyes Warm bronze & tan shades work great to make blue eyes sparkle!

What will be your go-to party look this season?

Lady GaGa’s natural look!

Thursday, December 1st, 2011

Since bursting onto the scene just a few years ago Lady GaGa has gained a reputation for being eccentric & over the top….to put it lightly.

At first there was the white blonde hair & blood red lips that made her stand out from the crowd but with her ever evolving style influencing other artists to start going a bit ‘gaga’ she had to keep stepping it up.

GaGa has always been creative in her videos, whether she is dressed in fishnets & duck tape or dressed as a man!

Her red carpet outfits have always made headlines. The now infamous meat-dress is now on display in the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame. We have also seen her with cling-on type monster make-up & of course her arrival to the 2011 Grammy’s in an egg not unlike something from alien. She may be crazy & eccentric but at least there seems to be a theme, a method to the madness perhaps?

Lady GaGa is the latest cover star for Elle Magazine & she is glowing with a really stripped down look.

Her make-up is very minimal with muted neutral tones & she looks stunning. Her hair is very edgy while still maintaining a clean, minimal look. The mesh around her eyes brings a little bit of that GaGa edge that we are used to. She manages to look edgy while keeping the look fresh at the same time.

The LA Team are very impressed with the latest cover & we want to know what you think?

Do you love this look or do you prefer to see the monster in her?

Bold Lips at the AMA’s

Friday, November 25th, 2011

The focus in recent trends is all about the lips & bright, bold colours is the best way to really attract attention to your pout.

A look at the red carpet from this years American Music Awards shows us that the shades all the stars are going for are bright pinks, oranges & corals which suit most skin tones.

Katy Perry attended the awards ceremony wearing makeup created by amazing celebrity makeup artist Jake Bailey. Katy’s light pink dress was a big deciding factor in her lip colour. Jake explains that he “went for a coral (orangey) red as opposed to a classic red to pick up on some accents in the dress.”

“I used a bright coral red Covergirl lip colour in flame. This was the perfect colour to pick up on the dresses coral accents and complemented her pink hair,” says Jake.

Jennifer Hudson showed off her amazing figure in a draped, metallic dress, Christian Louboutin heels & you guessed it, a bright pink lip. The striking colour added a touch of glamour to her simple look & the LA Team have already begun trying to find a match to that fantastic shade!

From the small screen to the silver screen, Katherine Heigl never fails to impress. Like Miss Hudson, Katherine went for a simple look opting for a black dress & accessories. Her pinky/red lip colour really brightens the whole look  & adds a touch of fun to her otherwise minimal look.

Red, Pink or Coral, what’s your favourite bold lip colour?

I myself am a coral girl!

Amber Sibley is an Oscar-nominated make-up artist, she has worked on some extremely high interest productions including X-Men, Alice in Wonderland & Hellboy.

We had the great pleasure of her presence as a guest tutor here at LA Academy last week & we grabbed the chance to have a quick sit-down with her to pick her creative brain!

You are a world-renowned make-up artist, what made you want to decide to get into make-up artistry?

I was 11, dreaming of the BBC!

Where did you study to pursue this career?

I studied at the London College of Fashion HND & I specialized in make-up.

Sorry, I’m not a follower of Fashion.

Having worked on some of the biggest TV and Film sets in Hollywood, is there any advice or tips you would have for coping with the pressure from these demanding schedules?

Are there any upcoming productions you would jump at the chance to work with?

I trust my path- I will be led to the right projects.

We know how fast paced the make-up Industry can be – how do you relax and take some “me time”?

I meditate, breathe, connect with nature.

Looking back, is there anything you would of done differently?

Nope!

If you were to give any piece of advice for someone looking to get into the make-up Industry, what would it be?
