Another Icon joins MAC

Monday, January 9th, 2012

Iris Apfel is an octogenarian fashion maven. Her flair with colour and accessories and her remarkable wardrobe was the subject of an exhibition, Rara Avis: Selections from the Iris Barrel Apfel Collection (Rara Avis = Rare Bird), at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in 2005. The show featured 82 ensembles and more than 300 accessories, chosen from a wardrobe amassed over the last 50 years

Her style has inspired books, jewellery ranges, museum exhibitions and many a student’s embarkation on a career in fashion.

At the tender age of 90, Iris Apfel is now taking on the world of make-up, delivering her inimitable eccentricity to the fashion-driven – and far younger – crowd who usually shop at MAC.

The self-described “geriatric starlet” has seen a recent resurgence in the public eye thanks to her fashion line on HSN & in keeping with this line, the MAC collection is full of bombastically bright lipsticks, attention-grabbing nail lacquers and unambiguous hues of eye-shadow.

Perhaps at odds with many of her peers’ tastes, the palette she has chosen for the line is as contemporary as ever, with a hot pink lipstick that would not look out of place on another of the make-up company’s fans, Nicki Minaj.

Gemstone-like green, shocking pink and scarlet sit alongside no holes-barred dark grey, blue and orange.

On aging:

Getting older ain’t for sissies, I’ll tell you…You have to push yourself when you’re older, because it’s very easy to fall into the trap. You start to fall apart—you just have to do your best to paste yourself together. I think doing things and being active is very important. When your mind is busy, you don’t hurt so much.

The Rare Bird collection is available at MAC stores now, the LA team have already picked our favourite lipstick but we hear they’re selling out fast so we’re keeping this one to ourselves until it’s safely stowed away in our make-up bags!

Let us know what you think of MAC’s newest muse!

Damaged Hair Miracles!

Wednesday, January 4th, 2012

Let’s face it, we all love to experiment with our hair. In the space of three years I myself went through red, brunette, black & white blonde hair….not the best thing for your hair health!

After being a blonde I really had to start looking for ways to get my hair back into a good condition. I’m sure most of you have heard of Keratin,  its the proteins our hair is made from & it gives our hair strength. Joico have developed a range called K-Pak which is a Keratin restoring line & it is renound in the hair industry for being one of the best product lines to reconstruct damaged hair.

“With the highest concentration of Quadramine Complex in its formulas, K-PAK delivers the ultimate in healthy hair. K-PAK products work synergistically to rebuild, reconstruct, strengthen and protect damaged hair!”

These shampoos & conditioners are PH balanced to give your hair the right level it needs to stay healthy & keep it from drying out while also providing it with that all important Keratin. The thing to remember about Keratin is that too much can have the opposite effect. Your hair will become ‘too strong’ and end up brittle. The K-Pak line is manufactured to give you just the right levels of Keratin & moisture.

The real kicker in this line is the K-Pak Deep Reconstructor. This treatment has beauty gurus in awe, it has the highest levels of Quadramine Complex out of all Joico products penetrating the hair shaft to repair it from the inside out. The texture is not what you would expect from a deep conditioner, it is slightly runny but this is what helps it to penetrate the individual hairs & to top it all off it smells deliciously fruity!

After using this line for a month I can gladly say I am a fan of Joico & I will definitely be trying out some of their other lines. I recommend shopping around for a cheap set on Amazon or Ebay but you can also find this product in high end hair salons.

What’s your miracle product?

The quickest way to flawless nails!

Friday, December 2nd, 2011

During the past year we have seen a real rise in nail trends. Crackle nail polish burst onto the scene throwing us all into a nail art frenzy! Since then we have dabbled in tie-dye nails & even magnetic nail polishes.

For those of us who simply don’t have the time or patience to go dipping a sewing needle into nail polish to make designs there are of course, nail wraps!

The trend began with celebrities like Katy Perry, Alexa Cheung, Beyoncé and Rihanna leading the way so it’s no wonder they are quickly becoming a beauty must have!

With so many designs to choose from whether it be a block colour, animal print, lace or candy stripes you can make your nails look like little pieces of art with ease!

These little wonders only take 15 minutes to apply & last up to 7 days on nails & 8 weeks on toes! They don’t chip or stain will stay super glossy for the entire time you’re wearing them. You can get nail wraps at Topshop, Boots or online at Nail Rock .

Have you tried this new phenomenon?

Lady GaGa’s natural look!

Thursday, December 1st, 2011

Since bursting onto the scene just a few years ago Lady GaGa has gained a reputation for being eccentric & over the top….to put it lightly.

At first there was the white blonde hair & blood red lips that made her stand out from the crowd but with her ever evolving style influencing other artists to start going a bit ‘gaga’ she had to keep stepping it up.

GaGa has always been creative in her videos, whether she is dressed in fishnets & duck tape or dressed as a man!

Her red carpet outfits have always made headlines. The now infamous meat-dress is now on display in the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame. We have also seen her with cling-on type monster make-up & of course her arrival to the 2011 Grammy’s in an egg not unlike something from alien. She may be crazy & eccentric but at least there seems to be a theme, a method to the madness perhaps?

Lady GaGa is the latest cover star for Elle Magazine & she is glowing with a really stripped down look.

Her make-up is very minimal with muted neutral tones & she looks stunning. Her hair is very edgy while still maintaining a clean, minimal look. The mesh around her eyes brings a little bit of that GaGa edge that we are used to. She manages to look edgy while keeping the look fresh at the same time.

The LA Team are very impressed with the latest cover & we want to know what you think?

Do you love this look or do you prefer to see the monster in her?
