Signature Look – Lana Del Rey Hair

Wednesday, February 1st, 2012

She is one of the newest big things to catch our attention & with her sultry voice & looks it is no wonder Lana Del Rey is quickly making a name for herself as a new-age icon. Her style is a mixture of old Hollywood meets new Brooklyn & she describes herself as a ‘Gangsta Marilyn Monroe’.

What is the first thing that us girls think when we start obsessing over a new star style? How do we copy this ourselves!? Lana’s hair is one of her most notorious fashion statements more often than not rocking the Old Hollywood curls & the LA team are loving this revamped style! To create this look yourself part your hair quite far to one side & when it is still slightly damp run some mousse through it to make sure your style will last you all day!

Next, you need to get yourself some large bendy rollers available at Boots, if you want tighter curls you can opt for a smaller roller. Section off the fringe section of your hair & roll it backwards away from your face, twist the rollers around one another to secure them. You might want to add a bulldog clip to keep the hair from unwinding. Continue this around your head with about 5 rollers using large sections of hair.

Wrap a scarf around your head & go get your beauty sleep! When you wake up the next morning simply unwind the hair from the rollers & use your fingers or a wide tooth comb to relax the curls a little. Spritz a little hairspray & you are ready to go!

What do you think of the LDR style?

Twist & Shout

Wednesday, January 11th, 2012

Here at LA Academy we like to keep you all up to date with the latest trends, here is our first new hair trend of 2012 to report. Move over braids, there’s a new hot hairstyle in town: The twist! Celebrities and models alike are forgoing plaits in a mass movement towards twists . Unlike a braid, which requires some serious finger dexterity, twists benefit from being easier for the average, non-stylist to create on her own. But don’t mistake their simplicity for dullness — we’ve seen so many interesting and funky iterations of this hairstyle, from retro rolls to romantic updo’s, we’re swimming in possibilities!

Here are a few of our favourite ways to work this new trend.

Hang loose! Side-swept styles are a classic go-to for big nights out. Use a teeny twist to neatly gather your hair to one side. Or for more texture, divide the section you want to roll into two pieces and wind them together in a spiral.

The vintage rolled effect first made major waves at the Preen Spring Collection show during New York Fashion Week. The look was neatly structured, sweet, and inspired by ’40s hairstyles. Then, earlier this month, Scarlett Johansson mimicked the ‘do with a slightly more teased version.

Add pizazz to your ponytail by twisting the hair on each side of your part until you reach the nape of your neck. Secure with a clear elastic and backcomb the loose strands for sleek yet wild combo. For a more polished finish, wrap the hair ends into a low bun.

This season we were obsessed with Rachel McAdams’ cluster of curled, mini buns. The teeny wraps were an elegant and whimsical way to glam up her look. To keep the style low-key, create messy knots so strands stick out.

There are so many ways to make this your own.

Let us know your favourite way to do the twist!

Budget Winter Rescue Miracles

Thursday, October 27th, 2011

The winter months can be filled with snowy fun but it can also be harsh on your skin.

Cold weather & central heating can wreak havoc on our bodies. Here are a few little miracle cures to get you through this season & keep your skin & hair gleaming.

LIPS

One of the first changes you might notice coming into the winter months is dry, cracked lips. This can be a problem for so many people and it can be quite painful. Supermodel Helena Christensen has revealed her secret cure to tackle this and it might surprise you!

Dogs Trust created this product for – you guessed it – dogs! They sent samples to many celebrities to use on their pets and found that they received quite a few unexpected responses.

“My son’s lips always get very dry and red and swell up during the harsh winter months. I have tried every possible lip balm but none of them were able to stop them from cracking – until we put Snout Balm on,” the supermodel revealed. “I use the balm myself now, on my lips and on dry spots in my face or body.”

The best part? 33% of profits go towards the Dogs Trust who care for over 16,000 dogs in need!

HAIR

If you walk into Boots today you will see an endless list of deep conditioners to choose from but how do you know what to choose? The LA Team have been discussing this and we have come to the conclusion that natural remedies are the way to go!

Forget the cosmetic aisle, go to your natural food aisle and pick up a jar of Coconut oil. Some of you may be surprised to see the oil comes in solid form. Remember, a little goes a long way so just rub your fingers onto the coconut, rub your palms together & sweep it through the ends of your hair. It has been proven that the particles are small enough to get into your hair shaft giving it the extra moisture boost it needs.

For coarser hair we recommend switching to something a little more heavy duty like Argan oil. Originally marketed by Moroccan Oil at a hefty €38 you can go to your local health shop and get a bottle of pure argan oil for as little as €8!

SKIN

Argan oil is also great for dry & even acne-prone skin and while we were skeptical at first about putting oil on our faces, we would definitely recommend it.

For those of you who don’t want to use oil on your face there is a great range of skincare products by Eucerin. Originally used for sufferers of eczema, this product has trickled into the shopping baskets of so many women and men who are prone to dry skin.

Do you have any beauty secrets of your own?

Let us know, we love finding new little tricks!

Wrap up warm everyone!

The Bold & the Beautiful: Make-Up Looks from LFW

Thursday, September 22nd, 2011

This year’s catwalk make-up looks were all about bold colours. Statement looks are back this season and lucky for us, they’re not to difficult to master.  The only thing you have to do is decide whether its lips or eyes that you want to work with.

If you want ‘look at me’ lips then go for a bright coral to really make your pout pop. This colour has lasted us well through the summer and considering it works so well with most skin tones, we’re happy to say it’s staying here to carry us through this season & keep a bit of that summer glow in our lives! Zesty orange tones are also a great way to experiment with lip colour.
Winged eyeliner and cat-eyes are here to stay but this season why not adapt this look with a pop of colour for that added wow factor! Play with colours like violet, teal or red to vamp up your look. Going extreme with an extended wing even in classic black will always draw attention!
Mac’s ‘fluidline’ comes in a variety of amazing colours guaranteed to accentuate every eye colour. Simply use an angled eye-liner brush to apply the colour as close to the lashline as possible, use short strokes to make sure you keep an even line. When you get to the outer corner of your eye simply flick it up & out.
Have fun trying out these LFW looks,

LA Review Illamasqua Bronzer in “Writhe”

Tuesday, September 20th, 2011

Caoimhe Gaynor is a 1 Year Make-Up Specialist Course graduate who is now making a name for herself within the make-up industry. She has reviewed one of her favourite products exclusively for our LA Blog and she reveals her top make-up tips and secrets, that will help you achieve that perfect make-up look!

Have you ever wondered what the secret is behind  celebrities’ fantastically chiselled features and  fabulous bone structure? In most cases it isn’t perfect genetics but a very talented make-up artist.

As a make-up artist, contouring is crucial, and for most of us, is a secret weapon. It has the ability to completely transform the shape of your face and make your features ‘pop’. The best part about it all is that don’t need fancy equipment or expensive products. All you need is a bronzer and a blusher brush. It’s that simple.

Caoimhe’s favourite product to use at the moment is Illamsqua’s bronzer in “writhe”. I like this as it’s matt and carries more of a brown undertone as opposed to the abundance of orange toned bronzers that are tangoing the faces of Ireland at the moment! Illamaqua bronzer contains crushed pearl powder which gives the skin a flawless finish and a natural looking glow, this eliminates the possibility of making the face look dirty as so many bronzers have the ability to do.

The most effective way of contouring with this product is to use an angled blusher brush. It’s very simple.

Just take a small amount of bronzer and place it in the hollows of the cheek (work your way out from the ear towards the nose, this stops any build up and makes life a whole lot easier in terms of blending.)

Working your brush in a circular motion, blend the product upwards so you’re not left with a very apparent line on the face. Contouring should be as subtle and as natural as possible. This way, people will believe that you were born with an incredible set of cheek bones! The whole idea, and reason behind contouring, is to  create the ‘ideal’ face shape, that being oval. So depending on your face shape, you may feel the need to play around a bit and try applying bronzer to your jaw line, temples, nose, or forehead as well as the cheeks. Just remember,  dark shading detracts, so if there are any areas you feel you’d like to take the attention away from, contour, contour, contour!

For Caoimhe, the best thing about this product is that it can double up as an eye shadow and brow powder. Because of it’s unique colour tone, it is fantastic to use  in the socket in order to give the eye depth while still remaining quite natural. It is perfect for any day or subtle night time look.

Unfortunately, there  are no Illamasqua stores left in the republic of  Ireland since the store’s reluctant departure from Brown Thomas last year, BUT, fear not as it’s super easy to order online from the U.K (and a bit cheaper too!) This bronzer retails at £20, so even after converting to euros (approx. €24), it works out substantially cheaper than  similar bronzers on the market from  other leading brands. Check out their website at www.illamasqua.com.

Love,

Caoimhe @ LA

TOP TIP: In order to complete the ultimate contoured look, team this product with this amazing highlighter; MAC’s “Vanilla” pigment. Using a very small amount of highlighter above the shaded area can really create a contrast that will give you that glam, red carpet look in an instant. For just over €20, they’re a little more expensive, but one pigment pot will last you a long time so it is well worth the investment!
