Removing Your Make-Up

Monday, January 25th, 2010

liam-murphy-shoot-076We spend so long creating fabulous looks; it seems a shame to wipe all that lovely makeup off our faces sometimes! But it has to be done; we all know what happens to girls who sleep in their makeup; spots and other nasty skin conditions. These are the make up removal tools and products which professional makeup artists use:

  • Cotton swabs and wool
  • A gentle cleanser suitable for the eyes like Clinique Take the Day off or this Neutrogena power cleanser which the WOW.ie bloggers also love.
  • If you use a cloth make sure you wash it frequently; heat it by running hot water over the cloth to make sure you get everything off!
  • The girls at Beaut.ie rave about oil cleansers in their Guide to Gorgeous and we agree; oils lift all foundations and product clear off the face leaving you smooth and glowing.
  • Mascara should be carefully wiped off with cotton wool (and baby oil for waterproof mascara removal); try to avoid scrubbing your eyelashes when they’re thick with product.

Cleaning gives your skin a chance to breath all night. And of course saves you waking up looking like a raccoon having gone to bed a Goddess! What do you use to cleanse the night away?

Professional Make-Up Artist Planning 2010

Saturday, January 23rd, 2010

la-make-upThe make-up artists at LA Make-up are firm believers in planning for the future. We know how hard it is to make it as a professional make-up artist but it’s not impossible! Recruiter Lindsay Browning is back again with some tips for laying out your 2010 Vision. Lindsay says: ‘A vision board helps you focus on your desires, visualise them in your mind, and at the same time create a positive attitude and motivation!’ What more could you ask for?

So take a few minutes to sit down by yourself or with some other make-up fans and think about what you want to achieve in 2010. Think about your goals and your dreams; what can you do to make them real this year? Think beyond your New Year’s Resolutions and look at where your love of make-up can take you.

Create a vision board for your career using inspirational words and phrases cut out from magazines; stick them all on a board which you should display somewhere prominent in your house or apartment. Lindsay advises placing the visual board somewhere like the kitchen so you can see it everyday. That way you won’t forget where you’re aiming for and it will be easier to stay focused on your goals.  Words we’d suggest for an exciting make-up career would be: Fun! Work Hard! Training! Learn! Focus on Business! Client Satisfaction! Success! Glamour!

What would you put on your visual board this year?

January: Product of the Month

Wednesday, January 20th, 2010

olayWe hope that you all had your Christmas stockings filled up with great makeup products and tools! Our makeup artists sent in quite a list to Santa as well but now it’s back to reality and saving up for one product at a time.

With all the snow and wind around the one product you really need is foundation.  We posted here about how to apply your foundation. Our new favourite this month is the Olay Definity colour enhancer. Irish lassies can buy it at Boots or try a sample from the Olay site. It has everything you need for winter – moisturiser, coverage, a little anti-ageing to get over the Christmas party look and it’s wallet-friendly at under 30 euro for a product that claims to even out your skin tone in eight weeks! Read all about it at Marie Claire.

What’s your favourite foundation?

Work Experience for graduate professional make-up artists

Tuesday, January 19th, 2010

jc_la_makeup_022Our make-up artists at LA Make-Up are always so excited to see new students coming through and getting work in the industry. And yes we know it’s a tough time to be starting out but we have faith in you!

Here are some tips for getting more experience; that’s the key to success really.

  • Make friends with a make up artist working in the cosmetics industry and ask her or him if you can shadow them
  • Find out if any budding film directors are making student films in your area and offer your services for free. Try these Irish film schools.
  • Find some models who are building their portfolio and help them out in return for some publicity.
  • Look for hair stylists or fashion stylists who might need a partner.
  • Use the LA Makeup Facebook page to make contacts and you can both help each other to build up some experience.
  • Come in and talk to us after class, or talk to your tutors; we are here to help you!
