She’s definitely rocking the celebrity listings with Sienna Miller, Lulu Guinness and Lisa B queuing up for her services.  If any of you are planning on working in film, you can ask her about ‘Love Actually’ or ‘Trauma’. And Module Three make-up students working on historical make-up can get some tips thanks to her work on BBC programmes like ‘The Seven Wonders of Egypt, Greece and Rome’. You can read more on her website Astrid Kearney. She will be with us on Wednesday and Thursday February 17th and 18th.

If that isn’t enough for you, we also had one of our favourite editors; Elaine Prenderville from VIP Magazine in LA as our guest interviewer at LA Make-Up’s first 2010 ‘An Evening with..’ event, with Astrid Kearney. Elaine conducted an insightful interview that wowed the audience with great make-up and beauty tips.

Lindsay Browning Talks Emotional Intelligence

Monday, February 15th, 2010

dsc_5433aOur favourite recruiter is back with more job-search tips for aspiring makeup artists! She just posted on her blog about Emotional Intelligence and we think that you can follow this advice to find the perfect job!

Creating great make up looks is abut creativity and empathy with your clients. That’s why when Lindsay says: “Emotional Intelligence is ‘the capacity for recognizing our own feelings and those of others, for motivating ourselves, and for managing emotions well in ourselves and others’. (Daniel Goleman, Emotional Intelligence, 1995)”, we’re all ears. She gives us the four skill areas of EI; we think they’re linked to the makeup industry too.

1.    Lindsay says: “Self-awareness - the ability to read one’s emotions and recognize their impact while using gut feelings to guide decisions.”  We say: when you work with clients, go with your instinct to create the best looks for them.

2.    Lindsay says: “Self-management - involves controlling one’s emotions and impulses and adapting to changing circumstances.”  We say that this industry can be challenging and you will definitely need a tough skin to survive especially in the beginning.

3.    Lindsay says: “Social awareness - the ability to sense, understand, and react to others’ emotions while comprehending social networks.” We say working as a makeup artists means team work and taking the clients’ views to mix with your own creativity.

4.    Lindsay says: “Relationship management - the ability to inspire, influence, and develop others while managing conflict.”   We say working with a team of hair stylists, wardrobe stylists, dermatologists and clients requires tact, delicacy and a huge heaping confidence. Learn how to manage all of this and your career will take off!

Does this fit with your experience of the makeup industry?

Module 3 Work Experience at L’Oreal by Eleanor Magan

Friday, February 12th, 2010

loreal-fashion-show-002When I was told we would be doing our first work experience, I was excited.  Then we were told it would be an event for L’oreal I was a whole lot more excited, I mean all of us have grown up watching the adverts of Jen Aniston glowing skin, Penelope Cruz amazing eyes and Cheryl Cole glossy crowning glory and we have all looked in the mirror at one stage or another flicked our hair and batted our eyelids and siad those famous words, “Because we’re worth it!”

But then the nerves,it was my first make up job, I didnt know what to expect, all these questions started swirling in  my head, “what would it be like?”, “What do I wear?, “What if I mess up?, “What do I say?”,  these were reassurely answered for me by my tutor, but on the day I was still nervous, but good nervous!

When we arrived, we set up our stations. We were told the event was a hair demonstration for L’oreal called an “evening of colour”, the hairstylists were creating two looks each,so we were briefed by the hairstylists on the look they wanted to achieve, I was asked to create an evening look with smokey eyes and a nude lip, so I got to work. Suddenly everything I was taught over the last few weeks was coming in to practise from choice of product and colour to making someone feel comfortable and complimenting a person face and colouring and style.   It was a great feeling transforming a model, there was a buzz in the air, it was exciting there was people milling around, I enjoyed watching the looks come together and seeing my work on stage I felt very proud, I finally felt like a make-up artist!

February Product of the Month: Xen Tan

Thursday, February 11th, 2010

xen-tanThe LA Makeup Academy Beauty Therapy Diploma is starting this week. We’re very excited to welcome our new students and look forward to watching them develop over the next nine months. We’ll post here about some of the fabulous therapies and treatments which they’re learning; maybe you’ll be inspired!

Today let’s look at the Xen-Tan treatment. Harpers Bazaar said: “This stands out for creating the longest-lasting golden colour. In both salon and home DIY versions, it’s the favourite of Hollywood’s A-list right now.” Now if you’re working as a beauty therapist one of the most common requests is for tanning or ‘a bit of colour’ as Irish women say. First remember to say it like Zen-Tan and then you should know that it frees you from the main problems with fake tan; streaky bits and the dreaded after-smell. And of course it delivers a beautiful natural colour. Red magazine wrote: “Great creamy texture, fresh vanilla fragrance and delivers a radiant, non-streaky hue.”  You really see how great the colour is when you look at celebs like Aleesha Dixon, Anna Kournikova and the girls from The Saturdays. There isn’t an orange streak between them. Our students will learn how to apply the Face Tanner, Face Tanner Luxe as well as the Body Lotions. The range also includes a Body Scrub for that essential exfoliation time.

Which self-tanner do you use?
