Faces Cosmetics: Get the glow Part 1

Tuesday, August 17th, 2010

This week I am looking at Faces Product. Faces are famous for their great mineral products, eye shadows, blusher palettes and their fabulous highlighters.

I love Faces Stella Luna iridescent powder. This is a very versatile product. It can be used as an eyeshadow all over the eyelids, a highlighter under the brow to make your eyes pop and as a highlighter on your cheekbones to give the illusion of the bone structure you have always wanted. Also, to create a high fashion or a fantasy look, this could be applied with a wet brush for a more intense “Ice Queen” glow. So in a little or large amount, for subtlety or for drama, this product has it all. As a loose powder, this can also be applied all over the body to give you the healthy glow the Irish sun just can’t offer. So for versatility, Faces iridescent powder ticks all the boxes.

In my last blog I have converted myself to love strong lipcolour.  Working in retail or with the public, I was always quite nervous about wearing a strong lipcolour. What if it ends up all over my teeth and no-one tells me? What if the colour doesn’t last and I end up looking like I have an awful health condition?

These are the things that went through my head on a daily basis. However 2010 Autumn/Winter trends has brought me a new confidant.

So I was delighted when I found my way to the Faces counter in the Pavilions in Swords and picked up one of their luscious lipsticks. Faces lipsticks are quite unique. They come in 180 different shades so whatever looks you desire you will find your colour on their counter. As they contain Vitamin E and Shea Butter, they offer moisture to the lips to prevent that horrid cracking look.

I was instantly attracted to Doll No.134. This is a lush fuchsia pink that reminds me of a mix between the 1980’s cartoon jem and the perfect floral colour. I love to wear this with flawless looking skin, black winged eyeliner to give me that alternative 1950’s look.

Be brave, be yourself and don’t be afraid of boundaries. In make-up they are made to be broken.

Tune in tomorrow for part 2 of my Faces review.

Illamasqua Autumn Winter Collection 2010 Part 2

Thursday, August 12th, 2010

One of Illamasqua’s most unique products has to be their blue Liquid Metal Stoic. This product is gloriously rich and is a highly pigmented cream. It has to seen to be believed. This product can be applied to the eyes, face and body and you can either use your fingers or a brush to apply it.

Illamasqua’s Autumn/Winter Collection ’10 have brought out 3 exciting new colours:

an electric royal blue -Superior

an emerald green

a burnt copper -Resolute

The royal blue colour caught my eye immediately and applied as a wash of colour over the eye looks stunning. Liquid metal can also be used as a liner or a pop of colour in the tear duct. So whether your look is subtle or you revel is the drama, liquid metal is essential for your alter ego this

Lips

When I started training as a make-up artist I set myself the task to find a blue lipstick. Unfortunately I never found one…until last week. The lipstick is called Disciple and by looking at it you would believe it was black. A little test on the back of your hand will show it’s dark blue/navy colour. I know most of us can be a bit intimidated by bold lip colour but I adore this lipstick and will definitely be wearing it this season. I hope it gives you the confidence to speak your mind! Finally, an intense lip-gloss in Hermetic to top off this collection. This colour is the same burnt copper colour I told you about previously.

Illamasqua’s intense lip-glosses are so highly pigmented and luscious that you will want to wear them every day. It gives you the colour of a lipstick and the shine of gloss but in one easy application. Topped off with a sweet scent, your make-up bag is crying out for one of these.

So from Illamasqua this season, you can expect bold colours, bolder statements and to die for products. I hope you enjoy this collection as much as I will!

Until next time, if you are stuck in a make-up rut, why not pop into LA for a luxurious makeover and a make-up bag revamp or why not both!

Epitome of Elegance….

Tuesday, August 10th, 2010

“Love inspired them. Passion consumed them” and so let us introduce the much antipicated fashion fueled romantic movie of the year, Coco Chanel and Igor Stravinsky in cinemas nationwide last Friday.

The film focuses on Gabrielle Bonheur “ Coco” Chanel’s life after Boy’s death (1920), and more specifically on her passionate but short lived love affair between the French fashion legend and the Russian composer Igor Stravinsky. They were truly avant-garde, individualists way ahead of their time, brilliant, modern pioneers of their chosen fields. Coco Chanel provided controversy to the fashion world by questioning femininity in which she gave women a fresh and innovative alternative to the fussy and corseted style that was the norm around that time by incorporating designs that were inspired by menswear. Shirts, trousers and tailored jackets featured heavily in her collections.Who could forget the infamous Chanel jacket a wardrobe staple that transends into modern day, a Chanel suit of 1923 or Chanel handbag is still seen as a landmark purchase for women of increasingly younger ages.

Her style is one of which will never date, her classic and chic approach to style is iconic, from her use of monochrome to her oversized costume pearls, everything is still continuously referenced. As she herself once said: “Fashion fades, only style remains the same.”
So great is Coco Chanel’s legacy that fans make pilgrimages to her Paris apartment , which is preserved as she left it and is endlessly referenced for style. The latest being the brand new Chanel Shoe Salon, opening in September designed as a replica of the apartment inself. From her use of monochrome to her oversized ‘costume’ pearls and cuffs, everything is still sublimely, continuously referenced. As she herself once said: “Fashion fades, only style remains the same.”

The costumes are obviously amazing, especially considering Chanel opened their archives for the occasion thanks to Karl Lagerfeld.
Former model Anna Mouglalis is perfectly cast as Coco Chanel.

The French actress, who has worked with Chanelfor eight years and is currently the face of the label’s Fine Jewellery.

Coco Chanel was the epitome of sophisticated style and class; she was a truly elegant woman who always presented herself beautifully.

If you live for all things fashion, adore a good period costume film, love Chanel and 1920s fashion like us this movie is not to be missed!
