Lipgloss and Winter

Tuesday, January 5th, 2010

3b_3Goodness, how cold is it in Dublin this week? We know that our Make-up Resolution was to work more interesting make-up looks every day but it’s so hard to get up! A full-on lipstick application takes some time but if you really want to stay in a bed for a few extra minutes, get out the lip-gloss. This means you can get an easy shine and more polished look in seconds.

Plus it’s an affordable treat for January. We hope you all got those lovely products you wanted from Santa but just because the New Year is here doesn’t mean we should stop spending …  just a little. A clear gloss like the L’oreal Kiss-Proof Ultra-Glossy gives a good shine, or a less-pricy product like No 7 High-Shine will get out off to a great start in the AM. And if you have a little more dosh leftover, these L’Absolu glosses on Beaut.ie go for €23 a-piece. Just try to avoid smearing on too much as your hair will get all caught up which is never a good look.

If you’re doing some online shopping, then the Lucas PawPaw Ointment is Australia’s best-kept secret; perfect for fighting the wind and preventing chapped lips.

Santa’s Make-Up Tools

gr8-imageAs a makeup artist or makeup lover you know you can never have too many makeup tools or brushes. There are new toys out every week so which ones should you beg for this year?

Here at LA Makeup we know that good tools are expensive but if you’re serious about your career as a makeup artist then it’s definitely worth investing some of those scare Euro in the good stuff.  Really it’s better to have a small kit with high-quality brushes than a bulging bag of brushes which fall apart on a client’s face!

· The Vogue bloggers loved this Lashlight Mascara from Too Faced Makeup. A light at the end of your mascara means no more black cheekbones.

· Kabuki Brushes; perfect for loose powder and if you’re tying mineral makeup they’re great.

· MAC 187: pricy but will last forever and blends everything perfectly.

· Brushes on the go: Boots have a great range of cheap but decent brushes for party touch-ups like this brush and mirror combo.

· Bobbi Brown Makeup Manual – everything you need to know about techniques and skills

· Beaut.ie Guide to Gorgeous – does exactly what it says on the tin

· Mason Pearson hair brushes are expensive but bring guaranteed shine. Do a search on Amazon or E-bay to find them at Stateside prices.

· For makeup on a budget try the Barbara Daly range at Tesco. Surprisingly good.

For more advice pop in and see us on Dame Street. Remember you don’t have to invest in a full makeup set all at once; build it up piece by piece during the year. Talk to other makeup artists and find out what they recommend too!

Fix that Party Skin

blackskin

It’s mid-December and the party season is in full fling. The Budget is out but we still need to have fun and look great! We’ve been flat out working with you and so many celebs around town.

Our makeup experts work with models and TV stars so we really understand how important it is to cover up those late-night shadows and chase away the odd spot or two.

There are a few simple tricks to remember and you’ll shine all through the festive nights.

  • Always wash your face!! Use wipes if you have to but please please clean all the products off your skin.  A gentle product like Cetaphil or one of the Clarins range is great. Get some more suggestions over at Beaut.ie
  • Invest in a specialised eye-makeup remover. The skin around your eyes is very delicate. Dragging strong cleansers over it is a no-no. Try MAC Pro-Eye Makeup Remover or Kiehls Supremely Gentle Eye Makeup Remove
  • Once a week use a mask like this Botanics Sensitive Skin Soothing Face Mask
  • Drink lots of water; it hydrates the skin and keeps that glow glowing. And it helps the kidneys which will reduce those dark under-eye shadows.
  • For emergency spot treatment use a product like Panoxyl 5% benzoyl peroxide and dab that on under your foundation or at night
  • Conclears will be your new BF. Apply under the eyes but not all the way across – start at the inner eye and bring out about half-way. Try a product like Benefit Oh-La-Lift as a brightening primer underneath.

And of course we are open right through the season on Dame Street in Dublin. Pop by and see us for some more advice or a complete makeover. Read about our Christmas services in this post.
