Wearing Corals this Summer

Monday, April 19th, 2010

makeupschool-in-london-makeup-coralsWe are loving coral this season – eyes, lips and nails! It’s a great way to add some romantic colour to a look! It was The trend on catwalk shows like Dries Van Norten, Chanel and Prada.

Nails: Try this dreamy coral polish Tart Decco from Essie. Gentle enough to look great on Irish skin but still on-trend.

Blusher: Where else to catch that summer sun but on the apples of your cheeks. Coralista from Benefit will give you a pink shimmer – great for Monday morning skin!

Eye Shadow:  Tip One is that you can use the blusher above as a light shadow. And otherwise try the coral shades from our beloved MAC PRO palettes.

Lips: For a gentle stab at this on-trend colour start with the MAC Lipglass Lychee Luxe. When you’re ready for the Full Coral, try this sizzling coral from Chanel les Pop-Up de Chanel Sonia Rykiel’s model all had a sexy coral pout.

Just remember don’t layer it on too thickly! Especially with the blusher – avoid the Aunt Sally look unless you’re creating funky catwalk style! Plus if you can’t decide which coral shade to go for, maybe you could try the Bobbi Brown Cabana Corals and have it all!

LA Make-Up loves the BAFTA Look

Monday, March 1st, 2010

kristen_stewart_up_for_2010_baftaYou know we love getting all dressed up and pretty here at LA Make up so we’re always jealous of the stars on their big nights out. And this is definitely the season for it all! The BAFTAs have got us all excited and in the mood for the big Oscar night next week. Didn’t you just love the style?
Of course all the nominees are pampered and primped together by make up artists, hair stylists and wardrobe stylists in the Dorchester BAFTA Style Suites. It could be you working in there one day!

Our favourite look was Kristen Stewart. The Twilight star just looked so sophisticated and her look was miles away from her usual lumber-jack and bed-head style. Voted the Orange Rising Star, Kirsten rocked a dark metallic combo. You could re-create this look using

  • Use a pale foundation to re-create that night-time look with a great primer like SmashBox underneath
  • Line the eyes with a liquid like the MAC Shadow Liner
  • Use a brown shadow with red tinges to give a deep smokey effect without being too dark. Try Benefit ‘Big Beautiful Eyes.’
  • Eyelure Lashes or Maybelline’s The Falsies.

We’ll leave the pedicure choice up to you!All the best looks are together here on Vogue UK. And if you want to get this look for your clients, try the Lancôme BAFTA Beauty Compact as seen on Marie Claire.

Laying a Good Foundation

We know Irish women love the smokey eyes for Christmas. But our make-up artists at LA will tell you that getting the base is the key to festive success! Foundations and primers get better every year; no more orange face for us!

We’ll look at foundations next week so let’s start with primers. Now this isn’t a product you would used too often a few years ago but lately every brand from Benefit to Nars have this product on the shelves.

Basically what it does it set the foundation (or eye shadow) on your face so there aren’t any Halloween-style slippages happening on the dance floor. You can smooth over any imperfections in your skin before applying foundation.  And you know if foundation goes on more smoothly then you’ll look more glam! With silicon as one of the main ingredients a good primer will even out your skin tone and make sure that any dry areas caused by lines are plumped up.

Does that sound like a mini facelift? Well, it’s not quite that magical but you will get a better result for a big night out by layering this on under your foundation. Just remember that primer was developed for models to use under the heat of studio lamps; so it’s a heavy product. You probably wouldn’t want to use it every day as your skin just won’t breathe at all!

For anyone who has seen the effects of Airbrush Make-up then using a good primer is like this but of course only lasts for the day. Primer really helps if you’re heading out early and staying late; less re-application and less slippy face-look.

There are some great products out there for you. Smashbox was one of the first companies to make primer for regular people i.e. not models so that’s probably a good place to start. Beaut.ie has a list of Irish stockists.

For a lighter touch in some funky packaging try Benefit’s That Gal or their great Lemon Aid which goes on your eyelid; light enough for daily use.  Mac does a range of products including the Prep and Prime Skin Refined Zone which covers up your pores for a screen-perfect finish.

Next week we’ll have a look at foundations and the age old question; fingers or brush?

What do you think about primers?
