Wearing Corals this Summer

Monday, April 19th, 2010

makeupschool-in-london-makeup-coralsWe are loving coral this season – eyes, lips and nails! It’s a great way to add some romantic colour to a look! It was The trend on catwalk shows like Dries Van Norten, Chanel and Prada.

Nails: Try this dreamy coral polish Tart Decco from Essie. Gentle enough to look great on Irish skin but still on-trend.

Blusher: Where else to catch that summer sun but on the apples of your cheeks. Coralista from Benefit will give you a pink shimmer – great for Monday morning skin!

Eye Shadow:  Tip One is that you can use the blusher above as a light shadow. And otherwise try the coral shades from our beloved MAC PRO palettes.

Lips: For a gentle stab at this on-trend colour start with the MAC Lipglass Lychee Luxe. When you’re ready for the Full Coral, try this sizzling coral from Chanel les Pop-Up de Chanel Sonia Rykiel’s model all had a sexy coral pout.

Just remember don’t layer it on too thickly! Especially with the blusher – avoid the Aunt Sally look unless you’re creating funky catwalk style! Plus if you can’t decide which coral shade to go for, maybe you could try the Bobbi Brown Cabana Corals and have it all!

Professional Make-Up Palettes

Wednesday, February 24th, 2010

_mg_0054Deep inside our make-up bags, every make up artist keeps some magic colours to save the day. When you’re working on a film-set or behind the scenes at a fashion show, you need to have the full range of colours and every shade under the sun. MAC have nearly twenty colours which you could call ‘brown’ for example – look here at the MAC eyeshadows and see if you can name them all! It’s a tough job but someone’s got to do it.

The easiest way to combine colours is to follow the experts’ advice and use palettes.

Did you ever hear the saying “No need to re-invent the wheel’? Well, that’s how we feel about palettes. Cinema Secrets is one of our favourite brands – you’ll love working with them, choose from foundation palettes and eyes on the Cinema Secrets website here or shop with us.   You can find colour collections for every occasion with Bobbi Brown here. Brides will love the Long Wear Eye Palette. And you’ll need some funky holders for all of that colour. Here at LA Make-Up we have everything you’ll need to start your make-up collection off; you can choose from two-colour cases, large artists’ palettes or palettes for eye shadow and blush together.

How do you store your powders and eye shadow?

Santa’s Make-Up Tools

Tuesday, December 29th, 2009

gr8-imageAs a makeup artist or makeup lover you know you can never have too many makeup tools or brushes. There are new toys out every week so which ones should you beg for this year?

Here at LA Makeup we know that good tools are expensive but if you’re serious about your career as a makeup artist then it’s definitely worth investing some of those scare Euro in the good stuff.  Really it’s better to have a small kit with high-quality brushes than a bulging bag of brushes which fall apart on a client’s face!

· The Vogue bloggers loved this Lashlight Mascara from Too Faced Makeup. A light at the end of your mascara means no more black cheekbones.

· Kabuki Brushes; perfect for loose powder and if you’re tying mineral makeup they’re great.

· MAC 187: pricy but will last forever and blends everything perfectly.

· Brushes on the go: Boots have a great range of cheap but decent brushes for party touch-ups like this brush and mirror combo.

· Bobbi Brown Makeup Manual – everything you need to know about techniques and skills

· Beaut.ie Guide to Gorgeous – does exactly what it says on the tin

· Mason Pearson hair brushes are expensive but bring guaranteed shine. Do a search on Amazon or E-bay to find them at Stateside prices.

· For makeup on a budget try the Barbara Daly range at Tesco. Surprisingly good.

For more advice pop in and see us on Dame Street. Remember you don’t have to invest in a full makeup set all at once; build it up piece by piece during the year. Talk to other makeup artists and find out what they recommend too!

What was on your wish-list this Christmas?

Heigh Ho Silver

Wednesday, December 16th, 2009

highfashionSilver is a great trend to get into for Christmas. Slightly edgier than gold but still with enough glitz to get you though the night!

Silver eyes look great with cocktail hour sparkles or a tougher rock-chick late night outfit. And of course it’s perfect with your faithful Little Black Dress as you can see in these celeb photos from WhatSheWears.ie

When we work with clients we tell them that silver works best pared-down and simple; it’s a great light-reflector so just give it space to shine!

For high-glamour we recommend taking a deep silver right up to your brow-bone – sweep it over the socket area blending well for an amazing shine! Most ranges do a silver palette at this time of year. Try Bobbi Brown’s Chrome Eye shadow or start with a thin layer of Laura Mercier Metallic Crème Eye Colour for a shimmering gleam under your brow bone.

Leave your lashes bare for a fresher look or vamp up with long lashes from DiorShow Mascara from Dior.

Give your skin a treat earlier in the day with a hot mask so that it’s glowing on the night. Use a highlighter across the apples of your cheeks to add some extra shine. And if diamonds are out this year, what’s wrong with a few baubles from Oasis or H&M? All that glitters is not gold remember!

You could even try the full Silver effect with a dress like this one over at Elle UK from Jason Wu. If you’re not sure how this will all come together for you on the night come in and see one of our Makeup Artists for an Individual Lesson!
