Another Icon joins MAC

Monday, January 9th, 2012

Iris Apfel is an octogenarian fashion maven. Her flair with colour and accessories and her remarkable wardrobe was the subject of an exhibition, Rara Avis: Selections from the Iris Barrel Apfel Collection (Rara Avis = Rare Bird), at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in 2005. The show featured 82 ensembles and more than 300 accessories, chosen from a wardrobe amassed over the last 50 years

Her style has inspired books, jewellery ranges, museum exhibitions and many a student’s embarkation on a career in fashion.

At the tender age of 90, Iris Apfel is now taking on the world of make-up, delivering her inimitable eccentricity to the fashion-driven – and far younger – crowd who usually shop at MAC.

The self-described “geriatric starlet” has seen a recent resurgence in the public eye thanks to her fashion line on HSN & in keeping with this line, the MAC collection is full of bombastically bright lipsticks, attention-grabbing nail lacquers and unambiguous hues of eye-shadow.

Perhaps at odds with many of her peers’ tastes, the palette she has chosen for the line is as contemporary as ever, with a hot pink lipstick that would not look out of place on another of the make-up company’s fans, Nicki Minaj.

Gemstone-like green, shocking pink and scarlet sit alongside no holes-barred dark grey, blue and orange.

On aging:

Getting older ain’t for sissies, I’ll tell you…You have to push yourself when you’re older, because it’s very easy to fall into the trap. You start to fall apart—you just have to do your best to paste yourself together. I think doing things and being active is very important. When your mind is busy, you don’t hurt so much.

The Rare Bird collection is available at MAC stores now, the LA team have already picked our favourite lipstick but we hear they’re selling out fast so we’re keeping this one to ourselves until it’s safely stowed away in our make-up bags!

MAC Christmas Collection

Wednesday, November 2nd, 2011

Gone are the days when the most exciting thing about the holiday season was waking up on Christmas morning to find out what new surprise was waiting for you. Now, however, we have slightly different priorities when it comes to new things. Namely, the new holiday collections from MAC!

This year, MAC have teamed up with Olympic Skating champion Johnny Weir to create their new ‘Glitter & Ice’ collection. This 3-time title holder apparently loves to use MAC during his skating performances and in case the name didn’t give it away, his career was the main inspiration behind the collection.

Glitter & Ice is one of the largest holiday collections MAC has launched in the past few years boasting new shades for eyes, lips, face & nails so there is something for everyone here!

The shadows are mineralize and with how much we adore the mineralize face powders we certainly can’t wait to see these! The rest of the shades are all metallic shimmers & glitters which are always a holiday staple when it comes to make-up trends.

“Glide quickly past the competition! Morning frost or glam night out, here’s all the twirl, whirl & winter-wonderful snowglobe shades needed to send boys and girls into a double-spin. What will the judges say?” MAC

Have you had your eye on anything from this range yet?

Let us know what you think.

Winter Make-Up Haul in BT’s

Thursday, October 21st, 2010

It is always seems to be late on a Thursday or Friday evening when I find myself drawn into the warm arms of Brown Thomas.

My first stop was at the beautiful Lancome counter. I find their staff so lovely to talk to that I always find myself chatting with them for about a half hour. My hope  was to purchase a few shadows of the fantastic “Photogenic Lumessence”. It has medium coverage, is great for dry skin and gives a beautiful dewy look. When I find a foundation that I want to add to my kit, I would get it in about 3-4shades. These can then be mixed to suit all skin tones. To my horror, the colours I was looking for were out of stock but I was advised that they will be back in stock very soon.

Next on to Nars. I am a big fan of Nars products and find them very versatile. The Nars multiple sticks are fantastic and can be used as a blusher,a lipstick and an eyeshadow. What more can a girl ask for? Today I focused on getting a blusher and a bronzer. If you are fond of reading make-up reviews, I am sure you have heard of Nars Laguna bronzer. It is constantly being voted the best bronzer on the market. So today was the day that I was going to take a Laguna bronzer home with me. The colour is fanastic and could be used on so many different skin tones so I am very proud of my purchase.
Now for blusher. I was instantly drawn to “Amour”. The colour was beautiful. I find it is a common problem that women can tend to wear a very cool pink colour of their cheeks. Unfortunatley for most of us, this colour does not suit and it makes you look very tired and slightly sickly. I would always recommend sticking to a warmer colour blush. It instantly gives you a healthy glowing look. Aswell as “Amour”by Nars, why not try “Fleur”by MAC.

Finally, I ventured over to MAC. I love going into MAC last thing in the evening as it is peaceful and I don’t have to fight for help with one of their counterstaff. I was searching for a fantastic pigment called “Melon”that one of LA’s top tutors, Sarah Jane Wai O’Flynn uses very regulary. Unfortunatley it was sold out but not to worry, it will be back next week. I had a quick browse through their new Disney Villains collection. Great packaging and quite dark colours like plums and charcoals. Perfect for winter.

So guys, whenever you find yourself with some free time, Brown Thomas will be waiting there with open arms so why not treat yourself to some  new products? If you require some help, why not come to LA Make-Up Academy and get your make-up bag rejuvenated for a mere €25. With a little help and guidance, you need not waste anymore money and time on make-up you will never use.

Wearing Corals this Summer

Monday, April 19th, 2010

makeupschool-in-london-makeup-coralsWe are loving coral this season – eyes, lips and nails! It’s a great way to add some romantic colour to a look! It was The trend on catwalk shows like Dries Van Norten, Chanel and Prada.

Nails: Try this dreamy coral polish Tart Decco from Essie. Gentle enough to look great on Irish skin but still on-trend.

Blusher: Where else to catch that summer sun but on the apples of your cheeks. Coralista from Benefit will give you a pink shimmer – great for Monday morning skin!

Eye Shadow:  Tip One is that you can use the blusher above as a light shadow. And otherwise try the coral shades from our beloved MAC PRO palettes.

Lips: For a gentle stab at this on-trend colour start with the MAC Lipglass Lychee Luxe. When you’re ready for the Full Coral, try this sizzling coral from Chanel les Pop-Up de Chanel Sonia Rykiel’s model all had a sexy coral pout.

Just remember don’t layer it on too thickly! Especially with the blusher – avoid the Aunt Sally look unless you’re creating funky catwalk style! Plus if you can’t decide which coral shade to go for, maybe you could try the Bobbi Brown Cabana Corals and have it all!
