Hair Tips for Make-Up Artists

Tuesday, March 23rd, 2010

hair-productWe know you’re all training to be the best make-up artist that you can be. But if you can offer hair-stylist skills as well then you will be even more marketable. As you know we offer our students the chance the work with Toni and Guy and to see professional hair stylists at work on Photoshoots during their training. And you do need the best products to make sure all those great looks work!

No Frizz hair products: We love treatments that do as they say and their Straight-making sprays and creams do just that. Your clients will love them. And the Wave Shaping Curl Defining Cream gives you the control to create any shape you like.

Hairsprays have really grown up since the days it held your hair in a concrete-like vice. Like the girls at Beaut.ie, we love Shu Uemura Sheer Lacquer and would also recommend you try the fabulous Bumble and Bumble range. This BB Shine will help you control and add shine to finish off any look.

Look out for sales or online deals when you’re stocking up on hair products. For door-to-door delivery try the Hair and Beauty Ireland website, click here for their latest deals. And Flair.ie often have great discounts on hair products.

Make-Up for Darker Skin

Monday, March 22nd, 2010

oscar-imageWe’ve still got Oscar fever here at LA Makeup! Did anyone else see Gabourey Sidibe, Oscar-nominated for her role in Precious and think WOW! She looked so great. We wanted to tell every insecure teenager in the world to look at that smile.  Yes, it does help if you’re wearing Marchesa and have your makeup done by Toby Fleischman but still, we loved her look.

Toby said: ‘After seeing the magnificent Marchesa gown, it was an easy choice as to what her make up look should be – keep it simple and toned down so she could shine with her amazing spirit and beauty.’  He used:

  • MAC Studio Fix Fluid
  • Makeup For Ever Aqua Eye Liner (Black)
  • CoverGirl Smoky Shadow Blast stick in Bronze
  • Nars Blush in Lovejoy
  • Estee Lauder Tiger Eye Lipstick
  • Clinique Long Last Glosswear in Gold Spun

So the next time you’re working with clients try out this look and see if you can bring some red-carpet glow to someone’s life! Let us know how you go with it too!

Thanks to Talking Makeup for sharing her chat with Toby.

Illamasqua at LA Make-Up

Monday, March 22nd, 2010

make-up, illamasque at LA Make-UpHere at LA Make-Up we pride ourselves on bringing our students the best in the industry so we recently held a seminar with illamasqua a wonderful new store in BT2. Illamasqua is the newest make- up brand to come to Ireland, offering something new and different to the industry. The range has an edgy goth-rock feel and is a celebration of all your alter ego. There lipsticks, shadows and foundations go from the darkest black to the lightest white with every colour in between offering a huge variety and a rainbow of vibrant shades to choose from. The creative director is Alex Box one of the most creative make-up artist of our time. The brand is all about pushing the boundaries of what we can use make-up for and opens its self up to all who dare to be different.
Illamasqua is for the bolder person hiding inside all of us. Designed to be colour-intense, colour-true and long lasting, giving you a huge palette with which to express yourself. The staff kindly brought along a huge range of products and after a short film presentation explaining what there brand is based on they let us go crazy. We tried everything testing out the durability and the pigmentation needless to say we were all hugely impressed, and having so much fun playing with such a huge palette. There product itself has been designed with great detail and passion but can be used by artists and make-up lovers alike.
There was so many amazing aspects to the range but there stand out products had to be there Liquid Metal metallic cream shadow, its highly pigmented and illuminates anything it touches, just amazing. I have to say I also loved there huge range of lashes, in a variety of colours they are all handmade, ranging from dramatically captivating to romantically alluring they are something special and great for making an impact if you’re going on a night out.
They kindly offered everyone there a 25% discount so as you can imagine we all went home bankrupt.
Illamasqua also offers an online discount of 40% one of the best in the industry to professional make-up artists to help build that all important kit. So my suggestion is if you’re looking for something new and amazing to add to your make-up kit get yourself down to BT2 Grafton Street and check out this fantastic hidden treasure, you won’t regret it. They don’t test any of their products on animals which is of course an added bonus.

LA Make-Up loving the Oscars

Monday, March 8th, 2010

sandra-bulock-make-up-look-at-the-oscars-2010Well, we stayed up way too late last night to catch the Oscar glitz. Not feeling too chirpy this morning but it was worth it! Our three favourite looks were from Sandra Bullock, Carey Milligan and Penlope Cruz. Very different looks but all sharing the new bared-back approach.

Sandra Bullock – once we got past the sensual silver dress, we loved how simple her look was. Her make-up artist is Sandra Levin and she used classic Chanel foundation CHANEL Vitalumiere Satin Smoothing Fluid Make-up in Shell to give Sandra that dewy look and darkened her eyelids with brown shadows from Les Regards de CHANEL Palette. The stunning red lips were created with CHANEL Rouge Coco Lip Colour in Paris.

Carey Mulligan could be a good model for your younger clients; notice her bleached eyebrows and the lightness of her hair-colour as well as the barely-there makeup.

Jennifer Lopez had a great look for darker skin with Nars products. Matthe Vanleeuween used Orgasm illuminator to give that soft look to hers kin, and added drama to her eyes with the new Smudge Proof Eyeshadow Base and also applied the D. Gorgeous Single Eyeshadow with Brousse Duo Eyeshadow. He finished off with Crusing Lipstick and gloss.

Thanks to Talking Makeup and Makeup For Life for the inside tips on products!
