LA Make-Up goes to London

Sunday, January 3rd, 2010

london-eyeYes, that’s right London Town is a-calling. We have already had a really great course over there; the Ultimate Pro Intensive Course. We know those of you who went on that just loved the tutors and the whole experience.

Students worked on Airbrush techniques, catwalk and high fashion looks as well as creating looks for brides and models from different ethnic backgrounds.  They all wrapped up with a high-energy photoshoot to kick-start their portfolio. So now we’re ready to launch officially! The LA Make-Up London Academy is in St Johns so easy to access and an exciting area for students to be in. We offer the same high standards and professional tuition as we do in Dublin and LA so no matter where you study you’re guaranteed to leave ready for a successful career. There are so many opportunities for make-up artists in London that you’d be crazy not to try it.

Check back here and on the LA Facebook page for updates on the classes we will be offering in London from February 2010 .

Everyone has been busy here at LA in Dublin this week! We know it’s the end of the year but somehow the students and tutors are finding the energy for some great events!

LA Make-Up Open Day

Firstly we’d like to announce a Big day for all of you! We’re holding an Open Day this Saturday – read here for full details! From 11am onwards come and have a make-over, get a goodie bag or buy discounted products. And you can see some talented body make-up artists in action!

Naked Canvas

Yes, you read that right! The body art them beings early. Our students will be practicing their body art skills on the 26th November at the Kingston Hotel Kingston Hotel in Dun Laoghaire. One of our top make-up artists, Emma Woods will direct ten models and a group to students in creating some fabulous looks! They’re going to work on Burlesque, Out of Africa and Twilight among others. Sound be a great day out for everyone. We cover face and body painting techniques on our Module 3 Make-Up Course.

Toni and Guy

We focus on makeup at LA Make-Up but hair is so key to creating a stunning look. So this week some of our Module 3 students headed off to Toni and Guy for the day. They’ve already studied hair styling so it was great to see experts in action and see how much they can do! They learned how to work with hair stylists and created some fantastic looks.

Emma Bidwell had this to say:

“At the beginning I was nervous. We had to do
make up on 2 models each, but once I started it went really well!”

And Laurrine Murphy said:

“My favourite thing from the day was meeting such a great team
from team from Toni and Guy! It was very rewarding when they loved the
make-up I did.’

You can read more from the students here.

See you at the Open Day!

Getting down to Business

Thursday, October 29th, 2009

london-41A strength of our make-up programmes in LA Make-Up is the emphasis we place on real-life professional skills. Make-up is exciting and glamorous but it’s also a very competitive industry. So our Module 3 training course in Dublin includes a one-day Business Seminar to set you on the right path.

Recruiter Lindsay Browning takes students through the challenges of finding a job, interviews and nailing that dream position.

Lindsay posted here about creating your First C.V. All together now; aww. But actually, it can be a scary business. What do you write on your CV when you’ve just finished Module Three and your portfolio is your class photoshoot?

The trick is to use every connection you have to the make-up industry and make it clear to employers that you know your MAC from your Nars.

Now you know first impressions are key in this industry. You would never turn up to a shoot wearing last night’s makeup and the same is true for CVs. Read the tips on a site like Loadzajobs for some inspiration!

Make sure that you include your contact details, full name and qualifications. Image probably won’t be interested in your Junior Cert results but they will want to know you studied with us! Be selective about what you put in; Lindsay says you shouldn’t have more than 1 ½ pages in total.

Lots of people love makeup but you need to tell employers you’re special! Your CV should show them you’ve got unique skills and potential. So if you’ve done Debs make-up for your friends or helped out at with a film-student’s project put it in.

Spend some time thinking about what to say; you wouldn’t just slop on some eye shadow without thinking about the overall look would you? The recruiters at Monster for example tell us to avoid filling-up on cliché soup with phrases like ‘I’m a team player’ or ‘I had responsibility for….’ Think about what make-up skills and knowledge you can really offer!

And try to ask someone to read it when you’re done. It’s always helpful as they might spot a mistake you missed. Just one wrong spelling could send your CV straight to the bin.

We’ll be linking up with Lindsay from time to time to bring you some more advice on Make-Up as a Career!

What do you want to know about making it in the industry?
