Navy Power for your Eyes

Monday, September 28th, 2009

Autumn is definitely in the air this week; you’ll need more than a pint of Guinness to keep you warm this week!

And of course along with your winter woollies, it’s also time to stock up on new colours and stronger products. We love our shimmery corals but it’s time to deepen things up a little.

We mentioned the smoky eye here before and the gals over at Beaut.ie just posted a new twist to this – navy eye shadow.

So we’d like to row in and add that wearing navy on your face is as tricky as wearing navy clothes; do it carefully! But well done, it’s a funky new way to add some colour. You’ll need to do some shopping first though and make sure you get a rich product which will stay on all night.

The MAC Plumage or Deep Truth (don’t you love the names) would be great as would the Clarins Midnight Blue which Beaut.ie loved. We also love Makeup4Ever which do a great deep navy stuffed full of pigment and guaranteed to stay on till you drop.

Deciding on black or navy eyeliner is the next question! A thin navy will really make brown eyes pop out, while a darker tone will complement blue eyes and light up green eyes (you lucky thing). The navy tones really make the whites of your eyes shine.

Try this MAC pencil for starters, and if you’re a steady hand you could graduate to this Bobbi Brown Gel Eyeliner. Remember practice makes perfect.

And no smoky eye worth its salt is anything without mascara. We know you feel safe in black mascara but a deep navy is as far from the dreaded Abba look as could be. That said a gentle black like the Benefit BadGal could set off the look perfectly. And maybe next time you could extend the navy love with the Max Factor Masterpiece - a double coat will give your lashes a great sheen.

We know it’s little scary moving away from browns and blacks but just because the nights are getting longer doesn’t mean we should pack up all our bright colours. And the best thing about navy is that it will last you right through to spring. Freshen it up with some white or silver eye shadow smudged into the lash-line and it will carry right over.

We use all of these products so pop in if you have any questions, our Pro Team will be glad to help.

Have you tried the Navy look? How did it go for you?

Make-Up & Fashion Secrets at LA Make-Up

Friday, September 18th, 2009

Here at LA Make-Up, we know that getting your make-up just right can be a challenge. Even our experts sometimes spend hours getting things right for that special night out.

That’s why we offer you the chance to come and have it all taken care of here in the Dublin studios. For €75 you get a full hour of attention and advice in an Individual Makeup Lesson. It’s not just a make-over but also advice and ideas which will tweak your look to perfection for the whole season.

We start with your skin type; checking out what kind of cleanser and moisturizer you should use to bring out that glowing skin you know you have. Then we look at the best products to go with that skin type – it’s not all about the labels you know! There’s a lot of science goes into designing products to carefully match everyone’s skin and we can help you work through all of that to the best choice. We’ll talk you though a simple day-time look – the coveted ‘I’m not wearing any products at all, really’ and of course design a stunning nighttime look. Those tricky false lashes and how to draw a straight line with liquid liner – it’s all here waiting for you.

Bring a friend with you and you can both relax with a glass of bubbly and some chocolates. It’s perfect way to prepare for winter.

And if you’re happy with your make-up but it’s the clothes that are the problem, we have the solution here too with our Wardrobe Styling Sessions . Fashion Stylist Sinead Flanagan has been working in the Dublin scene for 10 years so you can be sure you’re in good hands. The trained Textile and Fashion Designer is here every week to give you the low-down on how to look good at any budget. She’s worked with designers from Stella McCarthy to Matthew Williamson so you know she has a great eye. She’s usually busy at the Dundrum Style Counsel Image Consultancy Service but we’re lucky to have her services here to add that final touch to our clients’ look (yes, that’s you!).

As with the Make-up Lessons you can come alone and keep all these yummy secrets to yourself. Or you can book a Group Outing so you can compare notes. We can even arrange for you to have both make-up and clothes done together. And a hair stylist would be on hand so you could go straight from the studios to the club.

Looking good doesn’t have to be stressful. Come in and see us, and we’re sure we can enhance that natural beauty and make this a season to remember!

Week of Glamour, Roses & Celebs at LA Studios

Saturday, August 15th, 2009

You know it’s summertime in Ireland when the beautiful Roses are in town and of course they dropped in to see us. Yes, indeed it was a busy week: from Roses to the Leaving Cert not to mention Kym Menzies-Foster teaching us a few things about airbrushing.

The Roses were doing a photo shoot at the Powerscourt Centre and where else would they go for a touch-up but to the experts here at LA Make-Up? It was great fun to be part of the excitement and we’re really looking forward to the final now we know the girls!

Our own LA promo girls had a turn outside on Wednesday when they visited 15 schools around Dublin. It was time for the Leaving Cert results and once the dreaded results are out, the Debs is next on everyone’s mind. So armoured with badges and LA Tees, the girls had a fab competition to announce. You’ll remember last week we talked about our Deluxe Debs package? Well, if you got one of the flyers we gave away, you could win a DD package for you and 3 of your friends!

Our own students were on a roll this week as well. First up they had an exciting opportunity to study airbrushing techniques with the great Kym Menzies-Foster. She really knows her stuff.

Then we bid farewell to 8 of our Module 3 full-timers as they finished their course on Friday. It’s a bit sad saying goodbye but we’re sure to meet up again. Especially as our students can return for free photoshoot experience after the course is done – all part of the service. It’s a thrilling time starting out on a new career, and we wish them the Very Best of Luck!

And of course that means it’s almost time to start a new course. The Module 3 Course takes you from beginner to pro with everything you need for a successful career in the make-up industry. A global team of tutors working with the very best products will give you a great start in this competitive industry. You’ll be ready for anything they throw at you!

To help you on your way, we have a fantastic LA Make-Up Kit worth €375 to give away to everyone who signs up by August 21st. With the kit and the discounts your student card can bring you, you’ll be looking amazing every day as well as turning your clients into stars.

Stars & Glamour at the LA Studios

Monday, July 27th, 2009

It was a star-struck week for us here at the Dublin LAMA studios. We glammed up the ultimate smokey eye with Girls Aloud eyelashes. Then we were inspired by Uma Thurman, Olivia Newtown John and Audrey Hepburn and finally blown away by the Spin crew.

Monday started us off with a bang when the Spin FM crew joined us to have their makeup done for the funky, new Spin FM website. It was great to put faces to the voices we hear everyday on the radio. And like they always say in the magazines, the girls were genuinely lovely and such fun to work with!  Plus of course they looked amazing after going under the brushes here in the studio with the LA artists. It was especially exciting for us to meet the voices behind our latest radio ad Have you heard it yet? If not, don’t forget to listen out for even more LA news on Spin.

But we’re not just on the airwaves. The LA style is bringing the glamour of Audrey Hepburn to your newspapers soon with the latest Vodafone shots. We also took the Uma Thurman look we loved in ‘Pulp Fiction’ and teamed it with the fifties innocence of Sandy from ‘Grease’. It’s sure to inspire you to try out some retro-glam. These fabulous re-creations were topped off by Michael Leon, the celebrity hair stylist you might have seen at Off the Rails Live. So the next time you grab a paper, check us out!

One thing you shouldn’t miss is the stunning smokey eye designed by one of our fabulous artists Emma Woods. This isn’t for the shy girls, serious WOW factor is guaranteed. Emma showed us how to put it all together – adding in the latest in lashes from the Girls Aloud Eyelure range, using both top and bottom lashes. And to finish off the dramatic effect, she covered them in lashings of mascara. We know this look is made for parties so she dabbed in a touch of dazzling sparkle on the inner corner of the eye for that final touch of glam.

Sound like your thing? Sign up here for next month’s newsletter and you’ll get a breakdown of the MAC products Emma used and a step by step video tutorial. Couldn’t be easier.

Which is your makeup look: Uma in ‘Pulp Fiction’, Sandy in ‘Grease’ or Audrey in ‘Breakfast at Tiffany’s’?
