Vogue’s newest cover girl!

Monday, February 6th, 2012

Here at LA, we don’t usually like to have a similar topic so close together in our blogs but when it comes to a cover of Vogue we feel like this is one not to be missed!

Lana Del Rey is going to be on the cover of Vogue March looking very Liv Tyler-esque it must be said!

LDR’s unique voice & equally unique style has been putting her at the top of everyone’s list for people to watch this year. “I am many of the thousands of people enraptured by the throaty, seductive voice of Lana Del Rey,” says Alexandra Shulman in her editor’s letter. ”Once I had seen Lana play at a small event in London, I was convinced that she would be a great Vogue cover girl, even though she is probably one of the newest stars in her field that the magazine has ever had on the cover.”

Who wore it best? Rihanna v. Caroline Sieber

Tuesday, August 9th, 2011

In one of our previous blogs, Sheer Perfection, we told you that sheer would be in this summer! And here are two very stylish ladies, rocking the sheer trend this summer.

Rihanna, famous for her daring outfits, wore this sheer Chanel dress when she graced the cover of Vogue in April of this year, pairing it with fiery red hair and matching lips for a bold, glamorous look. The dress perfectly suited Rihanna’s body, hugging her curves.

Four months later, the uber-stylish Caroline Sieber wore this dress to the Chanel Haute Couture Autumn/Winter 2011/2012 show at Paris Fashion Week. Caroline, one of the LA Team‘s favourite stylists, went for a more subdued look. She wore minimal makeup and let her shiny brown tresses hang loosely around her shoulders. Her only accessory was a small gold belt.

Choosing between these two ladies is a very difficult task! Rihanna’s body looks amazing in this dress but Caroline actually wore it to an event, which takes serious confidence as the dress is head to toe sheer!

Let us know what you think!

LA Make-Up loves the BAFTA Look

Monday, March 1st, 2010

kristen_stewart_up_for_2010_baftaYou know we love getting all dressed up and pretty here at LA Make up so we’re always jealous of the stars on their big nights out. And this is definitely the season for it all! The BAFTAs have got us all excited and in the mood for the big Oscar night next week. Didn’t you just love the style?
Of course all the nominees are pampered and primped together by make up artists, hair stylists and wardrobe stylists in the Dorchester BAFTA Style Suites. It could be you working in there one day!

Our favourite look was Kristen Stewart. The Twilight star just looked so sophisticated and her look was miles away from her usual lumber-jack and bed-head style. Voted the Orange Rising Star, Kirsten rocked a dark metallic combo. You could re-create this look using

  • Use a pale foundation to re-create that night-time look with a great primer like SmashBox underneath
  • Line the eyes with a liquid like the MAC Shadow Liner
  • Use a brown shadow with red tinges to give a deep smokey effect without being too dark. Try Benefit ‘Big Beautiful Eyes.’
  • Eyelure Lashes or Maybelline’s The Falsies.

We’ll leave the pedicure choice up to you!All the best looks are together here on Vogue UK. And if you want to get this look for your clients, try the Lancôme BAFTA Beauty Compact as seen on Marie Claire.

Santa’s Make-Up Tools

Tuesday, December 29th, 2009

gr8-imageAs a makeup artist or makeup lover you know you can never have too many makeup tools or brushes. There are new toys out every week so which ones should you beg for this year?

Here at LA Makeup we know that good tools are expensive but if you’re serious about your career as a makeup artist then it’s definitely worth investing some of those scare Euro in the good stuff.  Really it’s better to have a small kit with high-quality brushes than a bulging bag of brushes which fall apart on a client’s face!

· The Vogue bloggers loved this Lashlight Mascara from Too Faced Makeup. A light at the end of your mascara means no more black cheekbones.

· Kabuki Brushes; perfect for loose powder and if you’re tying mineral makeup they’re great.

· MAC 187: pricy but will last forever and blends everything perfectly.

· Brushes on the go: Boots have a great range of cheap but decent brushes for party touch-ups like this brush and mirror combo.

· Bobbi Brown Makeup Manual – everything you need to know about techniques and skills

· Beaut.ie Guide to Gorgeous – does exactly what it says on the tin

· Mason Pearson hair brushes are expensive but bring guaranteed shine. Do a search on Amazon or E-bay to find them at Stateside prices.

· For makeup on a budget try the Barbara Daly range at Tesco. Surprisingly good.

For more advice pop in and see us on Dame Street. Remember you don’t have to invest in a full makeup set all at once; build it up piece by piece during the year. Talk to other makeup artists and find out what they recommend too!
