Alex Hutchinson

Straying from the conventional way of learning photography, Alex taught himself the ins and outs of his first camera; colour, composition, light, timing, contrast and detail. The more he learned, the more he knew that it was photography that he wanted to do.  Alex’s route to photography has not been a direct one. Walking through the halls of IADT, something in him knew that the computer technology degree he was doing wasn’t quite the right jigsaw piece. And now, 6 years later, the puzzle isn’t quite such a puzzle any more.

Starting in a music entertainment company, his first photographic experiences took him to live concerts and sweaty backstage green rooms. The pace was quick, the shots vivid and intense, and this only fuelled his love of photography. Street photography soon became his passion.  Spotting moments in peoples life, which would never happen again and capturing them. Shooting on Black and White film was his favourite medium as it gave more of a challenge when shooting. The excitement for Alex was coming out of the darkroom with a roll of film full of moments that had past.

In his time as a photographer, he shot for RTÉ, TV3, Choice Cuts Entertainment, RSVP magazine, U Magazine, Hot Press, National Macho Society, Angel Landscaping, and SOULJACKER Productions. Alex has also experience shooting behind the scenes for movies and TV, and numerous live shows and events.

Photography is his one true love. The blurry shots are now clear; the black and whites are no longer grey. Capture everything, for tomorrow, things will be different.

5 best things in life for Alex Hutchinson are:

  1. Photography, without it I could not function properly. I can’t leave my house without a camera for fear that I might miss something.
  2. Music is a big influence in my life. Working for many different music companies over the years has allowed my collection to grow well into the hundreds of thousands. For me, music and photography are essential – I couldn’t live without either. Often lyrics I hear will help inspire me and I’ll create a shoot based around them.
  3. Alternative film has always been a huge love. My friends always thought I was a little strange because I didn’t enjoy watching big adventure films but would rather sit and watch old foreign movies.
  4. My family and friends are of course very important to me but that I like to keep personal.
  5. Passion – A passion for what I do and what I create helps me work harder to better myself and my work. I've done jobs which have sucked my soul dry, so I really appreciate having a career I truly love and am passionate about!
